Ah, right, I see but... is this for anything specific? Simply an interesting mathematical observation? Why these particular three grid types?

Triangles, squares and hexagons are the only 2D figures that are possible to make regular tilings of.

It is possible to make patterns using 3D shapes instead. I have done so with cubes and wonder if it also is possible to do it with tetrahedrons. Maybe even with an other of the five platonic solids but I doubt it. I also wonder if it is possible to make an icosahedron out of tetrahedrons. I searched the web but found nothing relevant. Maybe I can test with origami figures but that would take a while.

Hmm you could have trapezoids too, or scalene triangles (like with vertical lines through the ones to the right). Slanted triangles too, and irregular shapes, though maybe the point's just to demonstrate the different types of normal shapes, not all alternations/angles, and only symmetrical ones right?

Indeed I mean those with all sides the same length and all corners the same degree.
